The grandfather clock in the hallway struck midnight as Claire's footsteps creaked on the worn wooden stairs leading to the attic. Three days into clearing out her late grandmother's Victorian home, and she had saved the most daunting task for last. Everyone in the family had warned her about the attic—not because it was particularly creepy, but because Grandma Eliza had been something of a hoarder, especially in her final years.

"It is just an attic," Claire whispered to herself, the beam of her flashlight cutting through decades of dust particles that danced in the air. "Just boxes and old furniture." But as she reached the top step and pushed open the heavy wooden door, she could not shake the feeling that something was waiting for her.

The space was larger than she had imagined, with sloped ceilings and a single round window that let in slivers of moonlight. Stacks of cardboard boxes formed maze-like pathways throughout the room, and sheets draped over hulking shapes that could have been furniture—or something else entirely. The air smelled of mothballs and old paper, with a faint trace of something Claire could not quite place. Something like lilacs and smoke.

She moved deeper into the attic, her flashlight beam revealing cobweb-laced trunks and hat boxes, a mannequin missing one arm, and bookshelves sagging under the weight of leather-bound volumes. Claire was about to start with the nearest box when a glint of something caught her eye. A small wooden chest tucked beneath the eaves, its brass fittings reflecting her light.

Unlike everything else in the attic, the chest was free of dust.

"That is odd," she murmured, kneeling beside it. The chest was beautiful—carved rosewood with intricate patterns of vines and stars. There was no lock, just a simple brass latch that seemed to warm beneath her touch as she reached for it.

She hesitated, remembering her grandmother's reputation in town. Most had dismissed Eliza as eccentric, but some of the older residents spoke of her in hushed tones. There were rumors that Claire had always dismissed: that Eliza could predict storms before they formed, that gardens she tended never suffered blight, that she knew remedies no doctor could explain.

"Don't be ridiculous," Claire chided herself and flipped open the latch.

Inside the chest lay a book bound in dark leather, its pages yellowed with age. Beside it was a collection of small glass vials containing powders and dried herbs, each meticulously labeled in her grandmother's flowing script. A silver hand mirror rested against one side of the chest, its reflective surface oddly clear and bright in the dimness of the attic. And at the center of it all, a folded piece of parchment with Claire's name written on it.

With trembling fingers, she unfolded the note.

My dearest Claire,

If you are reading this, then you have found what I left for you. Of all my grandchildren, you are the only one who inherited the gift. You have felt it all your life, haven't you? The whispers of things before they happen. The way plants thrive under your care. The dreams that come true.

What I have collected in this chest represents a lifetime of midnight bargains—knowledge exchanged in the hours when the veil between worlds grows thin. Some call it witchcraft. I prefer to think of it as heritage.

Our family has always had an arrangement with the in-between spaces. Power for service. Knowledge for stewardship. I made my first bargain at seventeen, just as my grandmother did before me.

Tonight is the autumn equinox. At midnight, hold the mirror up to the round window. Someone will be waiting to meet you. Listen carefully to what they offer. Remember that all power comes with responsibility.

Choose wisely, my darling girl.

With eternal love,

Grandma Eliza

Claire's heart hammered against her ribs as she checked her phone. 11:57 PM, September 22nd. The autumn equinox. She looked down at the mirror in her hand, then at the round window across the attic.

She should pack everything away. Call her mother. Pretend she never found any of this.

Instead, she rose to her feet, mirror clutched tightly in her hand.

Three minutes until midnight.

Two paths before her.

One decision that would change everything.

As Claire raised the mirror toward the window, the glass began to warm in her hand. The attic seemed to hold its breath around her as the grandfather clock downstairs began to chime. One, two, three...

In the mirror's reflection, the round window no longer showed the night sky. It showed a doorway filled with swirling mist and, just beyond it, the silhouette of someone—or something—waiting.

Eleven, twelve.

Midnight had arrived, and with it, Claire's introduction to her grandmother's world of shadows and secrets, of ancient pacts and midnight bargains.

And what she would bargain for—or with whom—remained to be seen.
